Supporting knowledge projects

This page provides information about several related projects that investigated the surface and groundwater resources in coal basins within the Lake Eyre Basin bioregion.

Lake Eyre Basin Rivers Monitoring

This project consists of reports, maps and models on aquatic ecosystems of the Lake Eyre Basin. It includes a collation of existing knowledge; new knowledge on hydrology, geomorphology and ecology; and new hydrological and eco-hydrological modelling on two river systems.

Project information was produced by the South Australian Government and can be downloaded from the WaterConnect website using the external links below.

Lake Eyre Basin Springs Assessment

This project consists of reports, maps, models and data on groundwater-dependent ecosystems in the Lake Eyre Basin. It includes a collation of existing knowledge about groundwater-dependent ecosystems (Great Artesian Basin springs and associated wetland habitats); new hydrogeological and ecological information to fill gaps in knowledge required to support modelling; and new hydrogeological and eco-hydrological modelling in priority regions.

The reports, maps, models and data produced by the South Australian Government can be downloaded from the WaterConnect website using the external links below.

A report into the hydrogeology, cultural history and biological values of springs in the Barcaldine, Springvale and Flinders River supergroups, Galilee Basin springs and Tertiary springs of western Queensland was produced by the Queensland Government and can be downloaded from their website.

Arckaringa Basin and Pedirka Basin Groundwater Assessment

This project consists of reports, maps and models on the hydrogeology of the Arckaringa and Pedirka Basins in South Australia. It includes a collation of existing knowledge about the hydrogeology of the two coal-bearing basins; investigations and modelling on the hydrology of the two basins to fill critical knowledge gaps; and two and three dimensional basin representations.

Project information was produced by the South Australian Government and can be downloaded from the WaterConnect website using the external links below.

A report on the numerical groundwater model for the Galilee Basin

The Galilee Basin Hydrogeological Model report describes a numerical groundwater model of the Galilee subregion in Queensland, an area of approximately 300,000 square kilometres. The model covers the whole of the Galilee Basin as well as the parts of the overlying Eromanga Basin. This Basin contains aquifers that form part of the Great Artesian Basin, an aquifer system of national significance.

The groundwater model described in the report was developed to assess the cumulative impacts to groundwater of seven proposed coal mines and is the first basin-wide model in this region. Over 100 groundwater springs were modelled. Of these, 27 were reported to be of significant value and include such groups of springs as Doongmabulla, Mellaluka, Edgebaston, Correna and Corinda springs.

This report was produced by HydroSimulations on behalf of the Queensland and Commonwealth governments, and will be referenced in the bioregional assessment for the Galilee subregion.
