Beetaloo Sub-basin

On 27 April 2018 the Beetaloo Sub-basin in the Northern Territory was announced as the third and final region selected for assessment under the Geological and Bioregional Assessment Program.

The Beetaloo Sub-basin lies south-east of Katherine in the Northern Territory and forms part of the greater McArthur Basin. The sub-basin spans an area of about 30,000 square kilometres and is one of the most prospective areas for shale gas in Australia, containing an estimated prospective resource of 178,200 PJ of gas, as well as having liquids potential.

The basin is a “frontier” for unconventional gas. However, the demonstrated existence of substantial prospective and contingent shale gas resources, coupled with the proximity to infrastructure, including the Northern Gas Pipeline, make the Beetaloo Sub-basin an excellent candidate to deliver new gas supply to the East Coast Gas Market in the next five to 10 years.
